"The Natural Edge Bowl:
Tips and Techniques
with Denver Sams"
ORDER VIDEOS
Learn how to turn natural edge bowls with the guidance
of Denver Sams, a master woodturner and retired Purdue University
professor.
Denver's work is shown regularly in juried art shows
in Indiana, and as time allows he accepts individual students. Denver
has studied with renowned woodturners Rudi Osolnik and Abe Harper.
In this 80-minute video Denver starts you at the beginning,
with an overview of how to look at the raw chunk of wood and see
the bowl inside.
He shows some of his finished pieces and talks about
the variety of approaches you can take.
He covers safety, tool sharpening, and then puts a
rough piece of wood on the lathe and begins turning.
Throughout the video he stops the action and points
out "insider's" tips and techniques, such as how to move
the bevel of the bowl gouge to conform with the contour of the cut.
He explains power sanding, fixing the inevitable cracks
that show up during the process of turning natural edge bowls, and
covers his favorite method of finishing using tung oil.
There are, of course, many approaches to natural edge
bowl turning, but Denver's intent with this video program is to
give you one straightforward method to get you started.
