What we do--the
miracle of wet-vacuum cleaning
If you inspect the grooves of even the cleanest-appearing phonodisc
with a low power microscope, you will find chunks of dust trapped in the
grooves. Each time the stylus hits a chunk, you hear a pop. And each time
the stylus encounters that dust particle, it jumps, and puts a tiny dent
in the vinyl. After repeated playings, even if you remove the dust particle,
the stylus will continue to hit the dent, and produce a pop.
Even the best consumer record cleaning systems--cylindrical
brushes and anti-static cleaning fluid--will remove dust on top of the
groove surface, but will actually force smaller particles down into the
grooves. The only way to remove those particles is literally to vacuum
them out.
We use a cleaning fluid specifically designed for professional
phonodisc vacuum cleaning machines. We brush it on the surface of the
record, let it soak a few minutes, loosen the particles with a very fine
bristle brush, vacuum the fluid off, rinse with distilled water, and vacuum
again. We then put the disc immediately on a professional direct-drive
turntable for digitizing.
If the record still plays with pops and groove noise, we
can use dedicated software to reduce the unwanted sound, and we can even
fix a skipping record so that the skip is almost undetectable.
We can then digitally separate the phonodisc tracks so that
they become discrete titled tracks on the CD, and burn the CD.
As a final touch, we scan the label on the phonodisc, and
apply that to the CD so that your CD has the look of the original record.
